Man refuses to leave behind bedridden mom, both die in fire

Dhiren Nalinkant Shah, a chemist, chose to stay with his bedridden mother Nalini during a fire in the Jethabhai Govindji building in Girgaon. The fire brigade suspects a short circuit in the electric box and the old wooden stairs intensified the spread of the blaze. Dhiren's family left the building but he stayed with his mother. The fire reached their home before it was controlled. Dhiren succumbed to the fire while others were rescued using a connecting plank. The building lacked a fire-fighting system and residents had to exit through windows.
