New Omicron variant ‘not a threat’: Experts

The emergence of the EG.5 Omicron variant, designated a ‘variant of interest’ by the WHO, is unlikely to pose a significant pandemic threat in India, as there has been no significant change in the incidence rate of Covid-19 or hospitalizations. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that although there have been increased prevalence, growth advantage, and immune escape properties of EG.5, there have been no changes in disease severity to date. Till now, 243 new sub-variants have been found in India, with none of them posing any serious threat.
