Explained: Why Fitch has downgraded US credit rating to AA+

Fitch Ratings has downgraded the US credit rating by one notch to AA+, due to mounting debts at federal, state and local levels; political polarization and a decline in governance standards over the past two decades. This is only the second time in history that the US credit rating has been downgraded despite the economy's size and stability.
